Ready to get gardening on Capitol Hill?

With our website as your guide, you can start a garden on your patio, rooftop, window box, or in a planting strip along the street. Explore our interactive corridor map, find what to grow, and start nurturing today. Learn more about securing your own planting strip for gardening below.

1. Finding a spot.

Check out the corridor map to identify a planting strip and learn about its soil, existing plants, shade, and sun.

2. Getting a permit.

Visit the Seattle Department of Transportation website to learn about what and how much you can plant and apply for a permit.

Important information:

  • Once you’ve located your planting strip, make sure to call 811 to identify if any utilities will be in your way.
  • Have a drawing of your plan and the plants you intend to use ready to submit with your permit application.
  • Once in the Seattle Services Portal, select “Permits-Street Use” and navigate to and select the “Short Term Use” and “Gardening/Planting” record type FOR MOST GARDENS.

3. Seeking assistance.

If you would like help with this process, would like to plant a tree or install a rain garden, or have any questions, please contact Capitol Hill EcoDistrict staff at info@capitolhillecodistrict.org for help.
